Agentic AI engineers
Agents are distributed systems that occasionally invent their own next step. The engineering that makes them dependable looks much more like reliability work than like model work.
- Typical seniority
- Senior through principal
- Core stack
- Python, orchestration frameworks, model APIs, queues
- Focus
- Tool design, state, failure handling, traceability
- Engagement shapes
- Fixed-scope design, then embedded
- Typical duration
- Eight weeks to nine months
- Deliverable
- Traceable, evaluable agents with defined blast radius
Agentic AI engineers from CloudOps Network build multi-step AI systems that call tools, hold state across turns, recover from failure and hand off to humans. Engagements cover tool boundary design, orchestration, retry and timeout behaviour, tracing and evaluation of multi-step trajectories.
What agentic AI engineers do on our engagements
Tool boundary design
What the agent may do, with what arguments, against what permissions, and what requires a human first.
Orchestration
Planning, step limits, branching, parallelism and knowing when a simple state machine beats an agent entirely.
State and memory
What persists between steps and sessions, where it lives, and how it is invalidated when the world changes.
Failure handling
Timeouts, retries with backoff, compensation for partial work and a defined blast radius for every tool.
Human handoff
Confidence thresholds, escalation routes and an interface where a person can see what the agent already did.
Tracing and evaluation
Full trajectory traces plus evaluation of multi-step outcomes, not just final-answer correctness.
Before you build an agent
A good agentic engineer will spend part of the first conversation trying to talk you out of an agent. That is a positive signal, not a lack of enthusiasm.
Many problems briefed as agentic are better served by a deterministic workflow with one model call inside it. Agents earn their complexity when the path genuinely cannot be known in advance.
Is the path actually unknown?
If you can draw the flowchart, build the flowchart. It will be cheaper and more reliable.
What is the blast radius?
Every tool an agent can call is something it can do wrong at three in the morning.
Can you trace a bad run?
If you cannot reconstruct what happened, you cannot fix it or explain it to a customer.
Who catches it?
Handoff design belongs in the first architecture conversation, not after the first incident.

Questions about hiring agentic AI engineers
How is agentic engineering different from GenAI engineering?
GenAI engineering centres on getting one good response from good context. Agentic engineering centres on sequences of actions with side effects, which brings in state, permissions, retries, idempotency and tracing. The skill overlap is real but partial.
Do you work with a particular agent framework?
Engineers work across the common orchestration frameworks and with direct implementations. For systems with real side effects, a purpose-built orchestration layer often beats a framework, and a good engineer will tell you which situation you are in.
How do you evaluate an agent?
Trajectory-level evaluation as well as final-answer evaluation: did it choose sensible tools, in a sensible order, recover from failure, and stop when it should have.
Are agents ready for customer-facing use?
For bounded tasks with clear handoff and limited permissions, yes, and plenty are running today. Broad autonomy over consequential actions is still a poor trade for most businesses.
